A Child’s Life

Elle examines, explores, and experiences life fully. Her actions continually remind me that sometimes it’s good to put aside my adult concerns and just play, or check out that flower, or plant a leaf in mud just to see what happens.

Love

I attended a beautiful funeral Mass today for a great woman who was finally released from the crippling pain of rheumatoid arthritis. Later, I caught this moment between her husband and son. IMG_4730-2

Blogging, Retirement, and Models

I used to be an active blogger, writing daily and posting every image that I thought was fabulous. (Of course, they weren’t, but I thought so then.) From time to time, I’d talk about my life and share images of my family.

And then I retired. And got BUSY. Ironic isn’t it? Now that I am retired, it seems that I have less time, resulting in only sporadic posts.

I’ve picked up a few photo jobs here and there .. engagement shoots, family portraits, and (oh I’m so anxious about this one) a wedding this Friday.

Here’s David, who so graciously agreed to sit while I practiced lighting patterns.

Solitude

My 4-yr old granddaughter said this picture makes her feel sad. When I asked why, she answered, “The butterfly is all alone.” _MG_0751

Chihuly Magic in the Desert

IMG_6419I had a tranquil New Year’s Eve, wandering alone (amidst a crowd of thousands) in the Desert Botanical Gardens. Las Noches de las Luminarias is a beautiful holiday tradition here in the Arizona desert as the gardens are transformed for 31 days by the bright tiny spark of twinkling lights adorning the desert trees and the soft glow from 8,000 hand-lit Luminaria bags lining the walkways. This year, the desert plants were accentuated by the magic of Chihuly glass sculptures.

A starburst of blazing blue captures the guests' attention as they enter the park.

I spent a long time with each sculpture, partly because I searched for angles to photograph, but mostly because they are beautiful, whimsical, and fantastical. It was good that I was alone because I would have annoyed anyone with me by my dawdling.

I am pretty sure that these pieces represent flowers and cacti (need to do some research), but they feel like snakes…beds of brilliantly beautiful snakes.

I’ve done it…

A photograph is more than an image frozen on paper or plastered on your computer screen; it is a recording of a moment in life.

I have a professional website. After a few jobs, I realized that I need a place to show the images and allow the clients to purchase prints. So here it is: R Howard Photography.

I guess that means I’m on my way to being a professional. Wish me luck.

I am including this shot of the butterfly for a few reasons: 1) It’s my favorite butterfly image so far, and 2) a butterfly seems appropriate right now because it represents new beginnings.

My dream is to create images that evoke some kind of response, that elicit emotions, but it is larger than that. I want to make an impact with my camera. I want to make a difference, even if it is in one person’s life. I don’t know how I will do that yet, but I believe in the power of the photograph.

A photograph is more than an image frozen on paper or plastered on your computer screen; it is a recording of a moment in life. When you look at the picture, your mind and heart see more than just an image, because you remember that moment and you recall the emotions you felt.

Even if you do not know the person in the photograph or have never physically experienced the scene portrayed in the picture, there could be something the image that touches you.

I want to capture those emotions; more than that, I want to convey those emotions.

My 1st time on the ice… Thank you, Daddy!

Today, my older son and I took my granddaughter (umm…his daughter) ice skating. It was heartwarming to watch him teach her; he was patient, encouraging, loving, and fun.

I believe that if more children could spend time with their fathers, our world would be a lot better place.

My younger son became a father two days ago, and I can’t wait to watch him teach and play with his daughter. I know that he too will be a patient, encouraging, loving and fun father.
